Age-Defying Dreams: Overcoming Fertility Challenges

Madam T and her husband came to Metro IVF for treatment as they were worried about age factors, being 42 and 41 years old respectively. They had one child 10 years ago, as well as a miscarriage two years prior. After one round of timed intercourse, they decided to go ahead with IVF treatment and PGT-A to rule out any chromosomal abnormalities that might occur considering their age.

Mdm T’s AMH was only 5.1 pmol/litre (0.71 ng/ml), and her husband’s sperm result showed asthenoteratozoospermia. After the procedure, only one embryo could be transferred, but it resulted in a successful pregnancy nonetheless!

By the time women are in their 40s, fertility is about half of what it was in their late-20s and early-30s (ASRM, 2021). With age comes reduced egg quality, which leads to a higher risk of pregnancy loss, often due to an irregular number of chromosomes within the egg. Because of this, the miscarriage rate for those over 40 is close to 50% (ASRM, 2012). As such, it is recommended for couples over the age of 40 to consider PGT-A to avoid transferring aneuploids, which might lead to higher failure rates or miscarriages.
