Gynecological Ultrasound in Malaysia
What is a Gynecological Ultrasound? (Uterus Ultrasound Scan)
A gynecological ultrasound — sometimes called a gynae scan, pelvic scan, uterus scan, or abdomen scan — is a safe, painless, and non-invasive way to see inside your reproductive system.
Although the names sound different, they all use the same ultrasound technology to examine your pelvic organs — such as your uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and cervix — and help detect any issues early.
This imaging uses high-frequency sound waves (not radiation) to create real-time images, making it safe for women of all ages, including those who are pregnant.
| Feature | Gynae Scan (Ultrasound) | Gynae Screening |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Ultrasound of uterus, ovaries, and pelvis. | Full women’s health check-up (includes gynae scan + other tests). |

When and How Often Should You Have a Gynae Ultrasound?
For women with no symptoms and no known gynecological issues, a baseline ultrasound is recommended at least once in your 20s, and again in your early 30s.
From age 35 onwards, a scan every 1–2 years is a good preventive step, especially before planning a pregnancy or if you have risk factors like a family history of ovarian or uterine problems.

If you experience symptoms such as irregular bleeding, pelvic pain, bloating, or changes in your menstrual cycle, you should book a scan as soon as possible — regardless of age.
Why You Might Need a Gynae Scan
A gynecological ultrasound is commonly recommended if you experience:
- Pelvic pain or discomfort
- Abnormal menstrual bleeding
- Fertility challenges
- Routine women’s health screening
- Pregnancy monitoring
It can help detect conditions such as:
- Ovarian cysts – fluid-filled sacs on the ovary
- Fibroids – non-cancerous growths in the uterus
- Endometriosis – abnormal growth of uterine-like tissue
- Structural abnormalities of the uterus or ovaries
Types of gyne ultrasound
Two main types of scans are offered by Metro IVF, depending on your needs:
| Type | How It’s Done | Best For | Preparation | Typical Duration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Transabdominal Scan (TAS) | Probe on the lower abdomen | General pelvic overview, checking larger masses | Full bladder required | Around 10–15 minutes |
| Transvaginal Scan (TVS) | Slim probe inserted gently into the vagina | Detailed view of ovaries, uterus lining, early pregnancy | Empty bladder required | Around 15–20 minutes |
