Understanding Male Fertility: Semen Testing & Sperm Storage
What is Male Infertility?
Did you know that 1 in 6 couples struggle with infertility—and in nearly half of these cases, the cause is linked to male factors?
Checking sperm health early can make a big difference in Malaysia. It helps speed up diagnosis, guides the right treatment, and can save you time, money, and emotional stress in the long run.
Common causes of male infertility in Malaysia (Ministry of Health Malaysia, 2019)
At Metro IVF, we provide advanced fertility treatments like Intrauterine insemination (IUI), in vitro fertilization (IVF), and Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) which are not only accessible but also competitively priced. Getting a simple male fertility check could be the first step toward making your dream of parenthood a reality.
What is Semen Analysis and Sperm Freezing?
Semen Analysis – The First Step in Checking Male Fertility
A semen analysis is a simple test that looks at key aspects of your sperm—like how many you have (count), how well they swim (motility), their shape, volume, and overall health.
When should you get tested?
- It’s usually one of the first tests done when checking fertility, especially if a couple has been trying to conceive for 6–12 months without success.
- It’s also used after a vasectomy to make sure there is no sperm left.
What happens during the process?
- You’ll be asked to refrain from sexual intercourse or masturbation (basically no ejaculation) for 2-7 days before the test. This is to get the most accurate results.
- The samples are processed quickly at the clinic, with results interpreted by experienced professionals—so you won’t be left wondering.
Typical cost: A standard Semen Analysis at Metro IVF costs a mere RM 150
Do I Need Advanced Sperm Testing?
Sometimes, even when a basic semen test looks normal, getting pregnant still doesn’t happen. That’s where advanced sperm tests come in—they dive deeper into sperm quality, function, and genetic health.
When should you consider it?
- If you’ve had multiple miscarriages or failed fertility treatments like IVF, even though basic results look fine
- If you’re facing unexplained infertility despite trying for a while
- If you’re over 40, or have a history of cancer treatment, exposure to toxins, or past infections
What do these tests check?
- DNA Fragmentation Test: Looks for breaks in the sperm’s DNA that can affect embryo development
- Oxidative Stress Assessment: Measures harmful molecules (free radicals) that can damage sperm
- Genetic Screening: Checks for hidden genetic issues like missing parts of the Y chromosome or other chromosomal problems
Why Sperm Freezing?
Whether you’re planning ahead or facing unexpected challenges, sperm freezing (also known as cryopreservation) gives you the peace of mind that your fertility is protected—right when you need it most.
When do men choose sperm freezing?
- Before starting medical treatments like chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery that could affect fertility
- If you’re not ready for fatherhood yet but want to preserve healthy sperm for later
- Working in high-risk environments with exposure to chemicals, radiation, or heavy metals
- Planning a vasectomy but still want the option of having kids someday
- As a backup for fertility treatments in case collecting a fresh sample on the procedure day isn’t possible
How does it work?
- Provide a semen sample—either at home or in the clinic
- The lab checks the quality and adds a protective solution before the sperm is processed
- Your sperm is frozen in liquid nitrogen and safely stored for the long term
Fees:
- Initial freezing: RM 1,200
- Annual storage: from RM 600/year
